This Hippie Funk power trio out of Seville played a great set at The Village Inn last night.

At SC Butter jams, expect funky, danceable originals and meticulously arranged cover tunes. Their Lou Reed/Rolling Stones/Joe Cocker mashup was a crowd-pleaser at The Village Inn, and their grunge-flavored original 'The Sheppard' had patrons head-banging old-school style at the set’s finale.
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Ed Kuehn formed SC Butter over 20 years ago. The band's previous incarnations were typically large ensembles, often fronted by other lead vocalists. However, after some time on pause, Ed has recently reformed the group into a compact trio, bringing renewed focus, power, and clarity to his brilliant songwriting and musical vision.
With the fat cut away, you get to the bones of his songs—structural intricacies, engaging time signatures, and the intended energy. Ed’s raw, unique vocals support his Zappa/Page/Hendrix-esque guitar style, and his unpretentious frontman performance lands somewhere between David Byrne and James Brown.
Drummer Tony Rini is a straight-up pro—playing with effortless finesse, power, and taste, and bassist Joel Foose takes a uniquely melodic approach to the instrument and puts on a great show.
Ed Kuehn’s latest SC Butter incarnation allows his music to make full contact with the audience. I can’t wait to see how these guys continue to gel.

The Village Inn is spacious, yet cozy with lots of seating. Its wood floors make for a decent sounding room. The bar staff is quick and friendly in spite of a packed house, and the patrons were clearly enjoying the music.
